Quality Furniture from the World's Largest Furniture Showplace

OUR HISTORY

Furnitureland South grew from the desire of its founder to provide value to furniture customers.

Darrell Harris realized that people equated the furniture manufactured in North Carolina with quality and that they frequently traveled to High Point searching for value in the state’s well-made furniture. With a few catalogs, several showroom samples and an old truck, he began the company in 1969. During the first year, he sold, delivered and serviced the furniture himself. The next year he spent his time buying and selling, while his first employee made the deliveries. Customers told their friends about Furnitureland South and before long, a loyal customer base had been developed. Four years later, the first building was leased on Main Street. The downstairs was used for showroom space and the upstairs as a warehouse.

Adding selection to the already established combination of value and service meant providing more space.
In 1977 the first showroom containing 17,000 square feet was built to better display an increasing inventory of quality home furnishings. In 1980, a 20,000-square-foot addition provided space for a growing trend of displaying furniture in gallery settings. A warehouse was purchased in 1982 and one was built in 1984. On Business Interstate 85, the site of the present campus, a 104,000-square-foot corporate and distribution center was erected in 1988. In October, 1990, another 228,000 square feet of showroom space was added, thus putting everything under one roof. The furniture industry celebrated this grand opening with nationwide press coverage. Furnitureland South was on the map!

In its more recent history, Furnitureland South has seen unprecedented growth.
In 1992, a 342,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art distribution center was built, enabling the showroom space to grow to a third of a million square feet. Shopping for furniture was made even more enjoyable with the opening of Riverdale's Restaurant in 1995. History was made again in 1999 when the 500,000-square-foot Mart building was completed, along with the world’s largest highboy. Furnitureland South became an all-inclusive, one-stop shopping environment for customers from all parts of the globe.

A new state-of-the-art, climate-controlled distribution center with Hyperflow capability opened in 2001, and the former distribution center was converted to the Clearance Center. In 2003, the Skylink, which connects the Showroom to the Mart, was completed. The crowning jewel of the campus, the Skylink is a 400-foot, glass-encased walkway that contains smartly styled groupings showcasing an urban loft look with sleek, clean lines that reflect a contemporary sophistication. Riverdale’s Restaurant was replaced by Bear Rock Cafe in 2004, and in 2005 Furnitureland South launched a new catalog division

A family-owned and -operated company …
Darrell Harris not only founded Furnitureland South but he continues to this day as CEO of the company. After raising their two sons, Jeff and Jason, Stella Harris joined the company on a full-time basis and is actively involved in the management of its day-to-day affairs. Jeff and Jason literally grew up in the business and are intimately involved, as Executive Vice Presidents, in its daily operations, as well. All members of the Harris family have a tremendous love for and interest in the home furnishings industry, and Darrell considers Furnitureland South not only his livelihood but his hobby. He can usually be seen in the showrooms almost every Saturday.
